Chondrosarcoma, grade 2 and 3

Chondrosarcoma, grade II

  • Infiltrative; hypo-moderately cellular lobules of stellate-polygonal cells

  • Pale eosinophilic cytoplasm

  • Round hyperchromatic nuclei with mild pleomorphism; rare mitotic activity

  • Abundant hyaline cartilage matrix, with prominent myxoid degeneration

Chondrosarcoma, grade II

  • Infiltrative; hypo-moderately cellular lobules of stellate-polygonal cells

  • Pale eosinophilic cytoplasm

  • Round hyperchromatic nuclei with mild pleomorphism; rare mitotic activity

  • Abundant hyaline cartilage matrix, with areas of myxoid degeneration; necrosis

Chondrosarcoma, grade II

  • Infiltrative; moderately cellular lobules of stellate-polygonal cells

  • Pale eosinophilic cytoplasm

  • Raisinoid hyperchromatic nuclei with mild pleomorphism; rare mitotic activity

  • Abundant hyaline cartilage matrix; areas of myxoid degeneration; patchy necrosis

The grading of these neoplasms is admittedly subjective, and prone to sampling error. In a long bone this degree of cellularity and myxoid stroma warrants classification as grade 2.

Chondrosarcoma, grade II

  • Infiltrative; moderately cellular lobules of stellate-polygonal cells

  • Pale eosinophilic cytoplasm

  • Raisinoid hyperchromatic nuclei with mild pleomorphism; rare mitotic activity

  • Abundant hyaline cartilage matrix; areas of myxoid degeneration; patchy necrosis

Chondrosarcoma, grade II

  • Infiltrative; moderately cellular lobules of stellate-polygonal cells

  • Pale eosinophilic cytoplasm

  • Raisinoid hyperchromatic nuclei with mild pleomorphism; inconspicuous mitotic activity

  • Abundant hyaline cartilage matrix; prominent myxoid degeneration; stippled calcification

Chondrosarcoma, grade II-III

  • Infiltrative; variably cellular lobules of stellate-polygonal cells

  • Pale eosinophilic cytoplasm

  • Raisinoid hyperchromatic nuclei with mild pleomorphism; mitotic activity

  • Myxoid degeneration; patchy necrosis

The grading of these neoplasms is admittedly subjective, and prone to sampling error. In a long bone this degree of cellularity and myxoid stroma warrants classification as grade 2-3.
