Pathology: haemangioma

Synovial haemangioma

  • Circumscribed

  • Admixture of capillary-like and cavernous vascular channels

  • Endothelial cells are attenuated with eosinophilic cytoplasm

  • Monomorphic ovoid nuclei; inconspicuous mitotic activity

  • Congested and dilated vessels; focal myxoid stroma

Intramuscular angioma

  • Vessels with prominent adipocytic background

  • Vessels of varying caliber and mural thickness

  • Endothelial cells are attenuated with eosinophilic cytoplasm, and bland nuclei

  • Fibrosis; chronic inflammation; atrophic / regenerative skeletal muscle

Sinusoidal haemangioma

  • Lobulated; congested ectatic and anastomosing vascular spaces lined by endothelial monolayer

  • Eosinophilic cytoplasm

  • Monomorphic ovoid hyperchromatic nuclei; inconspicuous mitotic activity

  • Centrally prominent papillary endothelial hyperplasia

  • PMID: 1746680

Spindle cell haemangioma

  • Lobulated; fascicles of spindle cells admixed with vasoformative areas ranging from small and solid clusters to patulous thin walled channels

  • Eosinophilic cytoplasm, occasional vacuolation and rare hyaline inclusions

  • Ovoid nuclei with minimal pleomorphism; inconspicuous mitotic activity

Intravenous lobular capillary haemangioma

  • Lobulated

  • Central feeding vessels extend peripherally to small lobules of capillary-sized vessels

  • Pale amphophilic cytoplasm

  • Ovoid nuclei with mild atypia; rare mitotic activity

  • Centred within vessel lumen

  • IHC: ERG, CD31

Capillary haemangioma

  • Lobulated

  • Large central feeding vessels extend peripherally to small lobules of capillary-sized vessels

  • Pale amphophilic cytoplasm

  • Ovoid hyperchromatic nuclei with mild atypia; occasional mitotic activity

  • Overlying epithelial ulceration
